Comprising the villages of Pâturages, Warquignies and Wasmes, the district of Colfontaine is heavily wooded and its woods are the starting point for many walks and hikes, including the Rando des Leus. This 5km walk starts at the Tour du Lait Buré, and offers walkers many interesting discoveries.

In the past, this was a coalmining area, but woods and rural landscapes have replaced the collieries. The Marcasse mine was one of the largest before disaster struck in 1953, when 20 miners were killed there. Several famous artists have lived in Colfontaine, including Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), who lived in Wasmes where he was a Protestant evangelist preacher; Armand Simon (1906-1981), the great surrealist artist, who spent his whole life in Pâturages and Marius Carion, the painter from Wasmes.
