The Slag heap of Héribus, also known as "Mount Héribus", is located in the Borinage, south of Mons, in a densely populated area. This remarkable site offers a stunning viewpoint of the city of Mons, the Trouille plain, and the other slag heaps in the region. Biologically, it stands out for its richness in herpetofauna. The Héribus pit was the last mining operation of the "Société des Charbonnages du Levant et des Produits de Flénu" (Company of the Coal Mines of the Levant and Products of Flénu). It was opened in 1908 and closed in 1968, after being the most powerful in the region. A Site with Many Facets The Slag heap of Héribus is characterized by its red rocks on one side and blue rocks on the other, rising majestically on the heights of Mons. From the summit, visitors can admire the city of Mons to the north (northeast) and an impressive panorama to the west over the "Chaîne Boraine". The slopes of the slag heap alternate between rocky areas with varied colors, woods, and meadows that bloom in flowers from spring until late summer. Fumeroles also escape from the southwest slope, where a red ash slope stretches below the summit. Routes Several paths lead to the top of the slag heap, from the south and north sides. The north side, covered with woods, is typical of the Walloon slag heaps, while the south side is mostly covered with flowering meadows, offering a beautiful spectacle through the seasons. Location The Slag heap of Héribus is located south of Mons, east of Cuesmes, and forms the eastern end of the "Chaîne Boraine". Access From Mons, take the road towards Maubeuge. After about 2 km, the slag heap is on your right. Then take the right turn (N543) before the village of Ciply, then the first right. Continue for less than a kilometer and take the first right, leading to the foot of the slag heap, on the south slope.
