As part of the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the Battle of Mons in 1914, the Mons Memorial Museum is revisiting one of the most spectacular supernatural events of the First World War: the appearance of the Angels of Mons. The legend of the Angels of Mons, inspired by a story by the writer Arthur Machen, was adopted by a British society sorely in need of meaning and hope in the early months of the Great War. Depending on the version, the figure of Saint George appeared accompanied by celestial archers or angels dressed in white. 110 years after the battle of 23 August 1914, this exhibition seeks to understand the popularity of this story by examining the phenomenon of miracles and apparitions during the war. It looks at the theme of religiosity and the need to believe in times of war, and decodes the links between culture and propaganda. Why angels? Why, in the exceptional context of war, was there a need to believe? And today, what do we want to believe in?
