The archeological site of Spiennes was recognised by UNESCO in 2000. It is one of the oldest and largest flintstone extraction sites in North-East Europe. Six kilometers from the center of Mons, there are thousands of mine shafts spread over almost 100 hectares. The SILEX’s – the interpretation center for the Neolithic flintstone mines of Spiennes – aims at protecting and valorising this exceptional archaeological site as well as making it more accessible. At the crossroads of nature and culture, the tour is organised in 3 stages: a didactical walk outside, a visit of the museal space and the excavation area and finally a visit down into the original mines (booking required). In order to preserve the site, access to the underground is limited to 5.500 visitors a year and visitors must comply with a set of rules to ensure the conservation of the site.
