To celebrate the centenary of surrealism, CAP/Fine Arts Museum of Mons is dedicating a new exhibition to the artistic movement. Its brand new approach examines the disturbing object and its impact on society. Presented both chronologically and thematically, the exhibition “Surrealism: turning reality upside down” tells the story of the object (the three-dimensional object, but also the object in poetry, painting, photography, collage and film) in the surrealism of the 1920s and 30s. It then contrasts the surrealist object with newer movements that placed the object at the centre of the artistic scene from the 1960s onwards. This highly topical innovative exhibition investigates subversion, the very essence of surrealism, and how it is expressed today. It highlights the object's relationship with art and advertising, and questions the links between the object and the body, and the role of women. Offering a broad, panoramic view in the form of paintings, writings, photographs and objects by iconic figures from the Belgian art movement, including Paul Nougé, René Magritte, Jane Graverol, Rachel Baes and Marcel Mariën, the exhibition reveals surrealism in Belgium as it has never been seen before. The event is a perfect fit for the CAP (culture, art and heritage) project, which examines art's relationships with society and its position in urban space.
